A fiddleback mahogany bureau
A George III period mahogany bureau with the most beautiful choice of veneers. Fiddleback mahogany with exceptionally tight figuring, which, if in oak or walnut would represent burr wood. The piece also benefits from a lustrous waxed patination, only achieved by decades of polishing. The fall opens to reveal a fitted interior arrangement of drawers and pigeon holes. The central, shell inlaid, door is flanked by a pair of false book spines with drawers behind, further secret drawers are hidden behind a frieze which runs along the top of the pigeon holes. A tooled leather writing surface completes the interior. The drawers are oak lined and have original swan neck handles which retain some original gilding. Finally the ogee bracket feet are all original. English c1770.
