A silver resist Luster jug
A fine example of early English pottery. This charming little jug or pitcher has a well proportioned bulbous shape. The decoration is very finely drawn and in super condition, there is slight rubbing to a section of the line of silver inside the rim. Metalic resist is a technique dating back hundreds of years, and possibly began in modern day Iran. The technique involves painting the decoration onto the glazed surface of the jug with a substance containing wax or honey, when the jug is dipped into the liquid, containing silver metals, the liquid resists application onto the wax and runs off leaving the treated surface unsilvered. The piece is then fired once again at a low temperature. C 1810 -1820
