Sui dynasty carved stone Buddha
A carved grey limestone, full length sculpture of a standing Buddha. Sui dynasty 581-618. The head with typical long earlobes, a small mouth with a serene expression. The long draped robes falling into loose pleats, showing definition of the legs underneath. The right hand of the statue is depicted raised at chest height its palm facing forwards, abhaya mudra, is a symbol of fearlessness and protection from fear. The left arm hangs down and is loosely angled at the elbow with fingers bent and pointing upwards - varada mudra - symbolises giving and compassion. This beautiful carved stone Buddha has conservation repairs rather than restoration which could be undertaken by a professional conservator.
