Tang Dynasty stone carving
Tang dynasty 618-907, carved stone stylised deer.This charming animal with an enigmatic smile probably formed part of a larger tableau. In ancient Chinese culture the deer was seen as a symbol of longevity and devotion to parents. One ancient tale tells of a Chinese boy who dressed himself in a deer skin in order to mix with a herd and milk a doe, he then took the life saving liquid to his sick father.
